Just in time for Halloween, our scientists are engineering one of the most intense phobias around.
Strictly speaking, the incredible bounce of water in these gifs above doesn’t have to do with being scared—last we checked, water was still pretty stoic—but the phenomenon is called hydrophobicity, literally a fear of water. Nanoscale cone structures across the material repel water with extreme prejudice, preventing any absorption and sending the little molecules on their merry way.
The slower droplets—captured here with a camera capable of shooting at 30,000 frames per second—bounce along the superhydrophobic (!) surface unimpeded, but the faster ones break apart in that gravity-defying dance. Moving this technology into car and aircraft windshields might ramp up visibility and also help self-clean by carrying along dirt particles.
While not quite as magical as the Impervius Charm, just consider that the scientists actually used a self-assembly fabrication process. You know, because billionths-of-a-meter structures just work better when they can build themselves.

Exploring the Fallen Idols of Turkey’s Mount Nemrut
For more photos and videos from Mount Nemrut, explore the Nemrut Dağı | Mount Nemrut location page.
In the mountainous southeastern region of Turkey, one peak stands out above the rest. Nemrut Dağı, or Mount Nemrut, ascends over 7,000 feet (2,130 meters) into the sky, and at its peak explorers will find the scattered stone heads of what are thought to be ancient gods.
After the fall of the Seleucid Empire in 190 BCE, a host of successors emerged throughout the region surrounding the Taurus mountains. One such successor state, Commagene, ruled over many diverse cultures and religions. Their leader, Antiochus I, brought these beliefs together into a single imperial cult. The monuments at the top of Mount Nemrut depict the various gods in a blend of regional artistic styles and are thought to have adorned the still-undiscovered tomb of Antiochus I.
The statues lie toppled, defaced and strewn about the weathered mountaintop, suggesting that they were purposefully destroyed at the time of Commagene’s fall.
The site was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987.
Day 1 Alchemy 2013
Well today was pretty lax considering that we were suppose to work our balls off but I ended up sleeping on the way to alchemy which was much needed sleep because I had to pack all my shit up the day before. And only got about 3 hours of sleep IF THAT.
So we get to the site and were suppose to put center camp tent up but I ended up watching everyone do it cause there were to many chefs in the kitchen if you know what I mean. Me being the individual I that I am I have to be doing something or I’ll go crazy so I just start organizing shit until trogness is all
"Meh flash I’m hungry let’s get subway meh"
Shit fine with me haha. So we go to Walmart to get subway and we have our carts packed with beer and wine and guess what ITS SUNDAY this is a prime example of FML I really wanted to get saucy today bit what ever. Now I’m just playing music on my pad and writing this letter. So over all today way pretty chill nothing really out of the ordinary.
Connor is another guy that came with us and I feel like him and I are in the same thought process of how we feel about life right now. I’m going through a little heart break from the woman I have been with for almost two years but in all reality it doesn’t really bother me that much because I have come to the realization of who my friends are and who are the people who have my back. She says I need her to be in my life well I find that statement untrue but I’m about to smoke some hookah
Morning of Day 2 Alchemy 2013
Well last night was good not to cold I actually got a little hot when I was sleeping so I think I packed my blankets well! I’m trying my best to keep bad thoughts out of my head especially while I’m here. I want this to be a good experience for me and nope some negative cave to no where. This morning was very peaceful I went up to the effigy and sat and meditated and stretched and listened to some music. Very very nice way to start the week. Now Tyler is up and I guess we gonna get to work.
Noon of Day 2 Alchemy 2013
Well we got center camp sound going thank god cause with no sound on this huge ass property I was pretty much going crazy. I have to have music around me or I think to much inside myself. Right now that is a no beuno. This week I want to drown out mercury and do things for myself make my own choices with out influence of anything. We got all kind of craziness going on cause they are hanging the plan in how we are setting up center camp and Tyler’s all meh again so I gotta see how exactly we are setting this up cause I hate being confused about stuff I’m in charge of. The effigy build is coming together very nicely but I will say that the temple I say better than last years. I also thinks that the temple will be better than the effigy this year because of the color scheme that they have. Last years alchemy spoiled me so bad smh
DISDAIN THINGS YOU CANNOT HAVE: IGNORING THEM IS THE BEST REVENGE.
Wisdom in a nutshell:
• The more attention you pay an enemy, the stronger you make him. The less interest you
show, the more superior you seem.
• Remember: You choose to let things bother you. You can just as easily choose to
consider the matter trivial and unworthy of your interest. That is the powerful move.
• If it is impossible to ignore, then secretly get rid of it. Sometimes threats just go away by
